Bay Rum Aftershave

Homemade Bay Rum Aftershave – A Timeless, Handsome Gift from the Farmhouse

Classic Bay Rum aftershave — warm, spicy, and unmistakably traditional. It’s one of those old-fashioned recipes that reminds me of a simpler era, when men’s grooming products were made with real ingredients instead of chemicals you can’t pronounce.

This recipe is one that I tried last year, and was such a hit that I decided to put it in my in my Homemade Gifts eBook! It quickly became one of my favorites to make and gift. It looks beautiful in an amber glass bottle with a simple kraft label, and the scent only gets better as it ages. It’s the perfect project for anyone who loves classic self-care gifts, old-world charm, and a good DIY that feels a little luxurious.

Why Make Your Own Bay Rum Aftershave?

When you make something from scratch, you know exactly what’s in it — and that’s especially true with homemade body care. Traditional Bay Rum combines real spices, rum, and bay leaves for a clean, natural scent that’s woodsy and masculine without being overpowering.

Plus, it’s just plain fun to make. The process is part science, part craft — and the result is something thoughtful and unique that feels right at home in any farmhouse bathroom or holiday gift basket.

Homemade Bay Rum Aftershave

Ingredients:

  • Enough dried bay leaves to fill a pint jar ¾ full
  • 2½–3 teaspoons allspice
  • 3 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 1½ cups dark rum (or your favorite brand)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Jar: Start with a clean pint-size glass jar. Add your dried bay leaves until the jar is about ¾ full.
  2. Add the Spices: Sprinkle in the allspice and cloves — these give your aftershave its rich, warm fragrance.
  3. Pour the Rum: Pour in the rum until all of the ingredients are submerged. Give the jar a good shake to mix everything together.
  4. Steep: Store in a cool, dark place for 2 to 4 weeks. Shake the jar every few days to help the flavors and scents develop.
  5. Strain: Once it’s ready, strain the mixture through a fine mesh or cheesecloth into a clean glass bottle.
  6. Label & Store: Label your bottle with the date and name — Homemade Bay Rum Aftershave. Keep in a cool, dry place.

To Use

After shaving, splash a small amount onto your palms and pat gently onto clean skin. It gives a refreshing, lightly spicy finish that feels both classic and clean.
