All-Natural Grenadine

๐ŸŒฟ All-Natural Homemade Grenadine (Perfect for Shirley Temples!)

Thereโ€™s nothing quite like a classic Shirley Temple โ€” that bright, sweet, fruity drink that instantly brings back memories of childhood celebrations. The secret to that beautiful ruby hue and rich flavor is grenadine syrupโ€ฆ but most store-bought bottles are full of high-fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, and flavorings. Thatโ€™s why I make mine from scratch with real ingredients!

๐Ÿน What Is Grenadine?

Grenadine is a sweet-tart syrup traditionally made from pomegranate juice and sugar. Despite what many people think, itโ€™s not cherry syrup โ€” the name actually comes from the French word grenade, meaning pomegranate.

Making it yourself gives you:

  • All-natural ingredients
  • A deeper, richer flavor
  • No artificial dyes or preservatives
  • A perfect mixer for mocktails and cocktails alike ๐Ÿธ

๐Ÿงพ Ingredients

  • 2 cups 100% pomegranate juice
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1โ€“2 small pieces of lemon peel

Pro tip: If you canโ€™t find orange flower water, try adding a strip of orange or lemon peel while you simmer โ€” it adds a lovely citrus note!

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ How to Make Homemade Grenadine

  1. Combine pomegranate juice and sugar in a medium saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Bring to a slow boil, then reduce the heat and cover. Simmer for about 10โ€“15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add 1-2 small pieces of lemon peel.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool.
  6. Pour into a clean bottle or jar and refrigerate.

๐ŸŽ‰ Your homemade grenadine should keep in the fridge for up to 3 weeks โ€” much longer if you add a splash of high-proof vodka as a natural preservative (optional).
