Backyard Ice Rink
How to Build a 16ร22 Backyard Ice Rink (Step-by-Step DIY Guide)

There is something truly magical about stepping outside in the winter and skating right in your own backyard. No crowds. No admission fees. Just crisp air, rosy cheeks, and the sound of blades on ice.
The good news? Building a backyard ice rink doesnโt have to be complicated or expensive. With basic tools, a few supplies, and a little patience, you can create a 16ร22 ice rink that will provide weeks of winter fun for your family.
Below is exactly how we do itโstep by step.
What Youโll Need
Before you start, gather all of your materials so the build goes smoothly.
Materials (List of Materials from Amazon)
- 4 โ 2ร6ร16 boards
- 2 โ 2ร6ร8 boards
- 1 box of 3-inch outdoor screws (for the frame)
- 4 – L Brackets for the corners
- 1 box of 1ยฝ-inch roofing screws with rubber washers (for the tarp)
- 1 โ 18ร24 heavy-duty 6-mil tarp
- Gravel or sand (for leveling, if needed)

Tools
- Wood cutting saw
- Drill/driver
- Measuring tape
- Level
Step 1: Choose and Prepare Your Location
The most important part of building a great ice rink is starting with the flattest ground possible.
Pick an area of your yard that is already fairly level. Small slopes are okay, but the closer to level you can get, the better your ice will freeze and hold.
- Fill low spots with gravel or sand
- Rake it smooth
- Check level in several directions
Pro tip: Take your time hereโthis step determines how successful your rink will be.
Step 2: Cut the 2x6x8 Boards
Take the two 2ร6ร8 boards and cut 2 feet off each one.
Youโll now have:
- 2 โ 2ร6ร6 boards
- 2 โ 2-foot sections (donโt toss theseโyouโll use them!)
Step 3: Create the 22-Foot Sides
To make the long sides of the rink:
- Butt one 2ร6ร16 board up against one 2ร6ร6 board
- Take one of the 2-foot cutoffs and place it over the seam like a โbandageโ
- Screw it in from the inside out at an angle using 3-inch outdoor screws
Repeat this process to create two 22-foot boards.
Step 4: Assemble the Frame
Now itโs time to build the rectangle.
- Place the 22-foot boards on the long sides
- Use the remaining 2ร6ร16 boards for the short ends but make sure they are over the top of the 22ft section. Meaning the length remains 16ft not 16.4ft
- Secure all corners with 3-inch outdoor screws
- Add L-Brackets to the corners for strength.
You should now have a sturdy 16ร22 rectangular frame sitting flat on the ground.
Step 5: Install the Tarp Liner
Lay the 18ร24 heavy-duty tarp inside the frame, making sure it covers the bottom completely and runs up the sides.

- Smooth out wrinkles as best you can (Took me some time to do this part haha)
- Attach the tarp to the inside or top edge of the frame
- Use 1ยฝ-inch roofing screws with rubber washers to prevent tearing and leaks
Make sure the tarp is secure but not overly tightโyou want it to flex slightly as water fills the rink.
Step 6: Fill with Water & Let Nature Do Its Thing
Slowly fill the rink with water. Take your timeโrushing this step can shift the tarp or frame.

Once filled:
- Let the water freeze naturally
- Colder nights mean faster, stronger ice
- Avoid skating until the ice is fully solid and safe
Final Thoughts
This 16ร22 backyard ice rink has become one of our favorite winter projects. Itโs simple, affordable, and creates memories that last long after the ice melts.
Whether youโre teaching kids to skate, playing pickup hockey, or just enjoying a quiet winter evening under the lights, this rink is absolutely worth the effort.

If you try this build, Iโd love to hear how it goesโand see your finished rink!
