How to Make Homemade Bath Salts — A Simple Farmhouse Gift from the Heart

There’s something special about giving (and receiving!) a gift made by hand. In a world filled with quick clicks and store-bought convenience, a homemade gift says something different. It says I took the time. I care.

One of my favorite handmade projects — and one featured in my Homemade Gifts eBook — is crafting homemade bath salts. They’re simple, natural, and lovely to give. With just a few ingredients, you can create a thoughtful, luxurious gift right from your farmhouse kitchen.

Why Make Your Own Bath Salts

Homemade bath salts are the kind of gift that feels fancy but comes together in minutes. They’re made with simple ingredients, look beautiful in a jar, and can be customized with your favorite scents or herbs.

Plus, unlike store-bought versions, you control what goes inside — no artificial dyes or harsh fragrances, just pure ingredients from your pantry or garden.

These salts are not only relaxing, they also help ease sore muscles, soften skin, and provide a simple, peaceful escape after a long day on the homestead.

Farmhouse Bath Salt Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 parts coarse sea salt
  • 3 parts Epsom salt
  • 1 part baking soda
  • A few drops of essential oil (try lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint)

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Dried lavender buds, rose petals, or calendula flowers

Instructions

  1. Combine the sea salt, Epsom salt, and baking soda in a large mixing bowl. Stir until evenly blended.
  2. Add essential oils a few drops at a time, stirring well.
  3. Sprinkle in dried herbs or flowers for a natural touch of color and fragrance.
  4. Spoon the finished mixture into clean glass jars or tins and seal tightly.

Tip: For a more rustic texture, use coarse salts; for a softer feel, blend them briefly in a food processor before mixing.

Farmhouse-Style Gift Wrapping

Presentation turns something simple into something special. With a little twine, fabric, and creativity, you can give your bath salts that charming rustic farmhouse look your friends and family will adore.

  • Mason Jar Magic: Use small glass jars, wrap the lids in muslin or kraft paper, and tie with twine. Add a tag that says “Handmade Bath Salts – Relax, refresh, and unwind.”
  • Bundle It Up: Pair a jar of bath salts with a bar of Homemade Lavender Soap or a Beeswax Candle for a “Farmhouse Spa” gift set.
  • Seasonal Touch: Add dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or a sprig of rosemary for holiday gifting.

“Made with love from the farmhouse.” — perfect words for a handmade gift tag.

A Gift that Speaks from the Heart

Homemade bath salts are more than a gift — they’re a small act of care and kindness. They remind us to slow down, to savor the scent of lavender and the warmth of a bath, and to enjoy life’s simple comforts.

This recipe is one of many from my Homemade Gifts eBook, where I share step-by-step guides for creating heartfelt gifts straight from your kitchen and homestead.

Take a little time this season to mix up a batch and share the calm. Because sometimes, the most meaningful gifts aren’t found in a store — they’re made by hand, with love, right at home.
